Lymphedema Treatment

By Spine And Sports PT

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is an abnormal build-up of protein-rich fluid within the body, most often affecting the extremities.

Lymphedema may develop within a few months after a procedure, years later, or not at all. Once present, this chronic condition continues to progress.

If diagonosed early, lymphedema can be managed through proper treatment, quality compression garments, and good skin care.

How is Lymphedema Treated?

The gold standard treatment for Lymphedema is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).
The goal of CDT is to utilize the remaining lymph pathways to swollen areas, prevent infections and avoid fluid buildup. Components of CDT include:

  • Manual Lymph Drainage
  • Compression Therapy
  • Skin Care
  • Therapeutic Exercise

Keep Moving!

If you’re at risk for lymphedema or have lymphedema, it is important to remain active. Studies have shown that exercise, performed correctly and at the right intensity, can help improve lymphatic flow.

Possible Symptoms

- Pitting Edema
- Tightness or heaviness in the area
- Changes of texture in the skin
- Jewelry or clothing may feel tighter

Living With Lymphedema

If diagonosed early, lymphedema can be managed through proper treatment, quality compression garments, and good skin care.

Nutrition

Increased weight complicates lymphedema. Be sure to maintain a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and protein, and avoid excessive consumption of fatty foods, sweets, salts and alcohol.
